Local Population

Kern A-Thel is the only region in Kiern Vale, in which the Far’lil are no more than a small minority of the population.

About 80% of the locals of the region are En'mirians who intermarried with, and partially assimilated local branches of ancient Karansil tribes closely resembling the En'mirians in appearance and language, though not in culture. In their mountain haunts they maintained distinct local traditions stemming from the dark and cruel era, when they struggled for for survival against distant relatives of the Ogres. The ancestors of these tribes worshipped an ancient and cruel deity whose name and traits are long forgotten.

The names and pronunciation of the mountain tribes are easily identifiable by the stern "h" stop, primarily found at the beginnings of names but also in other words. For example, the En'mirian name "Tal'ranil" or "Til'ranil" would transform into "Tahlranil" in the mountainous pronunciation. Mountainous names and pronunciation generally omit the upper comma common in The En’mirin language.

The rest of Kern A-Thel’s population consists of a scattering of Far’lil who migrated from other regions; few Mistweavers, most of whom are affiliated with the Lord's Guard, and unassimilated savage tribes originating from the outskirts of the vast Mag Eglor Forest in the southeast of the region — distant relatives of the Tolo Valley shepherds. Those tribes occasionally migrate with their herds to the lands of Kern A-Thel, either because their high pastures are exhausted, or because they are driven away by the dark forces residing in the Mag-Eglor Forest. Unlike the assimilated descendants of the Karansil clans, they do not see themselves as subject to the lord or region’s laws.

Over the past 25 years, more and more En'mirians from Orm'theril migrated into the region: initially refugees from the defeated rebels of the Therilin province who settled mostly in the Ferneth Erthel valley north of the region, and today also people from central Orm'theril, including scholars from Tirenphel's Order and their followers.
